Australian One Nation MP Comes Out as Gay and Praises Immigrants in Maiden Speech
Jason Virgo won the seat of MacKillop in the recent South Australian election. In his maiden speech, he confirmed he is gay and introduced his Indonesian Muslim partner as “the love of my life.” He also spoke about his long campaign for marriage equality and said most of his friends come from immigrant backgrounds. Virgo grew up in a Labor-voting family that later turned to One Nation. He previously ran for the Australian Sex Party and worked as a guard at an immigration detention centre and a state prison. In parliament he explained he wanted to own his identity rather than let opponents weaponise it. He praised migrants for seeking “a better life” while also warning that recent migration levels have put pressure on housing and job opportunities for Australian citizens. A video of his full speech has been shared by local media.
