How Nigeria Can Feed Africa by Prioritizing Local Agriculture

How Nigeria Can Feed Africa by Prioritizing Local Agriculture

Nigeria has fertile land, abundant water, and hardworking citizens, yet many families face food insecurity and rising prices. This is not for lack of potential but because our agricultural sector needs strategic support. I propose six key steps: declare agriculture a national security priority with protected farming zones; launch a National Commercial Agriculture Programme with mechanization, irrigation, and affordable financing; organize smallholders into production clusters with shared resources; ensure transparent funding through digital tracking and audits; expand agricultural insurance and modern extension services; and establish agro-industrial processing zones to cut post-harvest losses and boost exports. Agriculture underpins food security, jobs, and economic stability. Bold, decisive action today will transform our farms, stabilize prices, empower farmers, and restore Nigeria’s role as Africa’s food basket.

What specific incentives do you think would motivate smallholder farmers to adopt those six key steps in their communities?

I agree. Subsidies on seeds and tools, stable off-take deals, plus training allowances would boost farmers' uptake.

It's true we have fertile land and water, but without addressing distribution challenges and infrastructure gaps, scaling up local production remains a big hurdle.

Prioritizing agriculture sounds ideal, yet focusing resources there might stunt growth in other vital sectors that also need attention.

Local cooperatives could pool funds for shared equipment, lowering costs for small farmers and speeding up land clearing and planting procedures.
