MDCN Approves Record 350-Seat Admission Quota for ESUT College of Medicine

MDCN Approves Record 350-Seat Admission Quota for ESUT College of Medicine — 1 of 3
1 / 3

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has granted Enugu State University of Science and Technology’s College of Medicine a 350-seat admission quota, the highest allocation to any medical school in the country. This follows a rigorous accreditation exercise led by Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakanma, the Council’s Deputy Registrar. He emphasised that quotas are awarded based on verifiable infrastructure, manpower, and training standards rather than projections. Inspectors praised major upgrades at ESUT’s teaching hospitals, including a new Accident and Emergency Unit, the refurbished Colliery Hospital, and a 300-bed International Hospital. These facilities could help reverse outbound medical tourism. ESUT’s Vice Chancellor and state health officials assured the Council of swift action on identified gaps and reaffirmed their commitment to global best practices in medical education and sustainable healthcare investment.

The highest allocation might simply reflect increased demand rather than an improvement in infrastructure or teaching capacity.

I dey wonder if pushing 350 seats at once might overstretch available faculty and resources, undermining student experience.

ESUT leadership ought to scale up simulation labs and hire more educators to support the expanded 350-seat cohort effectively.
