Honouring “Kekekpu”: The Legacy of Coach Okelue Nwaoboshi in Umuekea

In Umuekea, grassroots football thrived under Coach Okelue “Kekekpu” Nwaoboshi. His passing has left a void on the pitch and in our hearts. He believed deeply in youth development and discipline. I first connected with him in 2006 when he took charge of the Ekea Bombers. He saw potential in every player. I still recall how he moved my friend John from centre-back to left-wing during the Ibusa Football Tournament, only to restore him to defence for the playoff – a decision that paid off with a standout performance. More than tactics, he taught honesty, teamwork and resilience. His annual Christmas tournaments united families across Ibusa. Though he has played his final match, his spirit lives on in every young player he mentored. May his soul rest in peace.

Honouring legends is fine, but turning grief into real youth programs would be more meaningful moving forward.
