Retired Lt. Gen. Chikadibia Obiakor, First African UN Military Adviser, Dies at 75

Retired Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor has passed away at the age of 75. A statement from retired Air Commodore Sani Zakari confirmed his death at an Abuja hospital on Wednesday. Obiakor was renowned for his UN peacekeeping leadership, serving as the first African Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations at UN headquarters in New York. His career included command roles in the Nigerian Army and regional missions with ECOMOG in Liberia, where he also coordinated the 1997 elections. After leading the UN Mission in Liberia as Force Commander in 2006, he rose to UN Assistant Secretary-General and Military Adviser for Peacekeeping between 2008 and 2010. Even in retirement, Obiakor supported UN conflict investigations and humanitarian work in South Sudan and Syria. He was honored as an Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic for his service to Nigeria and the world.
