VP Shettima Reminds South Africa of Nigeria’s Anti-Apartheid Sacrifices Amid Xenophobic Attacks

Vice-President Kashim Shettima condemned recent xenophobic violence against African migrants in South Africa during the ECOWAS summit in Sierra Leone. He highlighted that Nigeria once deducted scholarship allowances to fund anti-apartheid movements across Southern Africa. Shettima urged the African Union to address the attacks and send a strong message against intolerance. The vice-president reminded South Africa that its freedom was backed by solidarity from Nigeria and Ghana. He warned that continued attacks on Nigerians could prompt retaliatory measures. So far, 1,490 Nigerian citizens have been evacuated from South Africa. The government says it prefers diplomacy but will protect its people if violence persists.
