Ebonyi Assembly Shuts Illegal Mine, Praises Compliant Operator in Ivo LGA

Ebonyi Assembly Shuts Illegal Mine, Praises Compliant Operator in Ivo LGA — 1 of 3
1 / 3

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly Committee on Solid Mineral Development, led by Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu, visited Greenfield Metals in Ihetutu Community, Ivo LGA. The chairman condemned unsafe underground mining, ordered an immediate closure, and noted the company’s failure to present its Environmental Impact Assessment, audit reports, community agreement, and revenue receipts. Hon. Abiri Godwin Abiri and Hon. Stephen Orji Igwe backed the closure and warned the firm would remain sealed until it fully complied with the Mining Act. The committee then inspected Arab Contractors and commended the company for meeting all safety standards, submitting the needed documents, and regularly remitting internally generated revenue. Arab Contractors’ Accountant, Mr. Kurotamuno Inioruton, pledged ongoing compliance and thanked the assembly for providing a secure operating environment. The committee also visited China Oriental Quarry Company to reinforce its oversight of responsible mineral development in the state.

Yes, local vigilante or community mining committees can report irregularities quickly and partner with regulators for regular safety inspections.

I'm not sure locals have enough clout to keep mining compliant without stronger government checks.

It's odd that the assembly only took action now despite ongoing illegal mining and safety risks in the region.

Praising a compliant operator feels premature when we still lack transparent follow-up on inspections and enforcement.

Local watchdog groups should document every mine inspection and share findings publicly to maintain accountability and foster compliance.
