Libyan Rally Against Migrants: Should It Be Called Xenophobia?
Hundreds of Libyans gathered outside the UNHCR office in Tripoli to demand that irregular migrants and refugees leave the country. They chanted “Libya belongs to Libyans” and called for the agency’s closure. Protesters held signs reading “Our love for our country is not racism” and “Libya is not the world’s garbage bin.” Libya is a major departure point for migrants crossing the Mediterranean, with around 900,000 living there as of mid-2024, many fleeing conflict in Sudan. The UN mission in Libya warned against the spread of misinformation and inflammatory rhetoric. It urged authorities to counter incitement and protect public order, social cohesion and individual rights.
