Lagos Butchers Shocked as Cow Prices Surge to ₦2.5 Million

The Lagos State Butchers Association has raised the alarm over soaring cattle prices. Prices have jumped to as high as ₦2.5 million this year, up from about ₦1.7 million last year. Alhaji Bamidele Kazeem blames insecurity, high fuel costs, and rising transport charges for the surge. He notes that moving cattle from northern Nigeria has become prohibitively expensive. A cow that once sold for around ₦1 million is now almost impossible to find. Many butchers and consumers are struggling to cope with the new price levels. The association urges the state government to fast-track the Eko Ranching project in Gbodu, Epe. They believe local ranching will boost supply, create jobs, and help bring meat prices down.

True talk, these sky-high prices must squeeze vendors' margins and push consumers to find cheaper protein.

True, this price hike must really strain butchers and push meat costs higher for everyday families.

It's interesting that butchers point to insecurity and fuel hikes, but doesn't the broader livestock supply chain play a bigger role?

Transport charges alone can't fully explain such a sharp price jump; we should also consider middlemen fees and currency fluctuations.

Local butchers could pool resources for bulk transport bookings, negotiating lower rates and sharing security arrangements to curb costs.
