Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood to Face Trial on Multiple Sexual Offence Charges

Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood to Face Trial on Multiple Sexual Offence Charges

Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood will stand trial in January 2027 on allegations of rape, indecent assault and sexual assault dating from 1983 to 2016. Prosecutors accuse the 68-year-old of four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault involving seven women. Some alleged incidents are said to have occurred at BBC studios in London during the 1990s and at other locations including a hotel and a music festival. Westwood, who denies all charges, did not appear at Southwark Crown Court for the brief hearing today. A pre-trial review is set for December 14. He remains on bail with strict conditions, including notifying police of any travel or change of address. The Metropolitan Police have urged anyone with information or affected by these incidents to come forward. Specialist support services are also available for those impacted by sexual violence.

What impact do you think the long gap between alleged offences and trial will have on the case?

I agree, that long wait can dull witnesses' memories and make evidence harder to follow.

I'm not convinced the lengthy wait will make or break the trial—solid evidence still drives a case.

It seems quite surprising that these allegations span over three decades yet only now reach trial. Evidence must be challenging to gather.

Holding an experienced broadcaster to account is important, but we should also be careful not to assume guilt until verdict day arrives.

Victims and witnesses should document any memories and evidence now to support testimony when the trial begins in January 2027.
