Nollywood Triumph: My Father’s Shadow Wins Best Movie at AMVCA

Nollywood Triumph: My Father’s Shadow Wins Best Movie at AMVCA

At the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards on May 9, 2026, My Father’s Shadow was honored as Best Movie. Producers Funmbi Ogunbanwo and Rachel Dargavel accepted the award on behalf of the team. Africa Magic praised the film’s story, craft and impact. Directed by Akinola Davies Jr. in his feature debut, and co-written with his brother, it follows two young brothers and their estranged journalist father during Nigeria’s 1993 election crisis. Shot on 16mm film, the drama blends intimate family scenes with political history. Its cast—including Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù and brothers Godwin and Chibuike Marvellous Egbo—earned wide acclaim. Before the AMVCA win, it made history as the first Nigerian film in Cannes’ Official Competition and picked up honors at BAFTA, the Gotham Awards and on the BBC’s best films list.
