How a ₦700K Favour Destroyed My Seven-Year Friendship

How a ₦700K Favour Destroyed My Seven-Year Friendship — 1 of 2
1 / 2

I met Tunde in our first year at university in 2015. We became so close that I’d spend holidays with his family in Ibadan, and he’d stay with mine in Lagos. He was truly my best friend. In 2022, his mother fell ill and he asked to borrow ₦500,000. I trusted him completely and sent ₦700,000 straight from my savings. He promised to repay in three months, but after six months he never mentioned it again. Every time I checked his social media, he was living it up—weekend trips, new clothes, spraying money at a wedding. When I asked him to pay back, he got defensive and cut off communication. He later sent me ₦100,000 with no explanation and vanished. It’s been over three years and I still miss my friend. Now, I only lend what I can afford to give away. Would I reconcile? Maybe—once he returns the remaining ₦600,000 he owes.

When Tunde first mentioned his mum's illness and borrowed ₦500,000, did you voice any doubts or questions?

It's surprising how quickly one financial favour can shift the balance in a long friendship.

I get the hurt, but maybe you could have clarified repayment terms upfront instead of assuming trust would cover everything?

Next time, consider drafting a simple repayment plan and setting clear deadlines before lending or borrowing large sums with friends.
