Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlán has been named interim head coach of Uruguay’s senior national team and Under-20 side following Marcelo Bielsa’s departure. Uruguay exited the 2026 World Cup at the group stage with two points after draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, followed by a loss to eventual champions Spain. Forlán scored 36 goals in 112 appearances for Uruguay and won the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup. His previous coaching roles include brief spells with Peñarol and Atenas. He is expected to lead Uruguay during the September and October international window.
