Governors Pledge Simultaneous Passage of State Police Bill to Boost Security

Nigeria’s governors have agreed to fast-track the State Police Bill by passing it simultaneously in all 36 state assemblies once it reaches the National Assembly. They spoke at an ARISE News town hall in Abuja, saying decentralising policing will bring law enforcement closer to communities. It is expected to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve response times. President Tinubu sent the Executive Bill on June 24, 2026. The amendment would move policing to the concurrent list and could add up to 400,000 officers nationwide. Speakers say built-in safeguards will prevent political misuse. Further changes to the Police Act will cover recruitment, funding, oversight and coordination between state and federal forces. Many now see the focus shifting from debate to delivery.

Decentralising policing alone won't fix mistrust or underfunding across states—those issues require deeper reforms beyond just moving responsibilities closer to communities.

State assemblies should map out clear funding plans and training programs now, so local police units aren't left under-equipped or without essential oversight.
