Plateau Launches Bold Climate Action Plan to Safeguard Farmers and Communities
In Plateau State, rising temperatures and unpredictable rains have devastated farmlands and homes. The government has responded with a new Climate Change Policy and Action Plan (2026–2030), developed through consultations in all 17 Local Government Areas. Farmers, especially women, are already receiving training in climate-smart techniques like greenhouse farming. Authorities are planning improved drainage systems, flood-control infrastructure and new boreholes. Ecosystem restoration and expanded tree-planting campaigns aim to boost long-term resilience. A statewide Climate Assembly now includes youth representatives to ensure grassroots input. Plans for a dedicated climate law and community Climate Change Week will institutionalize these efforts beyond the current administration. While these initiatives signal strong political will, their real test will be in consistent funding and implementation, with success measured in safer homes, stable harvests and a more predictable future for vulnerable communities.
