Kigali Day 2: Exploring Rwandan Fashion, Craft and City Flavours
After a reflective morning in Mövenpick Kigali, I set out to explore the city’s creative heart. Over breakfast at RAAVA, I savoured a warming spiced African tea and a cheese omelette while chatting with fellow travellers under soft morning light. My day unfolded across Kigali’s design studios. At Sonia Mugabo’s atelier, skilled artisans shaped timeless silhouettes that honour Rwandan heritage. Saint Umi impressed with its sleek, futuristic pieces, and Mwinda’s décor gallery revealed how the humble cow motif carries deep cultural meaning. For lunch, I chose the open-air Flamingo Cabana by the pool and enjoyed roast chicken, crisp potatoes and fresh kachumbari. Later, Kivu Noir introduced me to Rwanda’s single-estate coffee story, and at the Irebe Centre I tried my hand at Imigongo painting and traditional basket weaving under the guidance of local craftsmen. By evening, I returned to Mövenpick to rest and pack for tomorrow’s gorilla trek at Volcanoes National Park. Today’s blend of fashion, craft and cuisine offered a vivid glimpse of Kigali’s forward-looking spirit.
