May Day 2026: CAPPA Urges Action on Inflation and Housing Crisis
Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has urged all levels of government to move beyond ceremonial speeches and tackle the severe economic pressures facing Nigerian workers on International Workers’ Day 2026. The group highlights soaring living costs, stagnant wages and weak social safety nets. Rising rents in cities like Lagos, Abuja and Rivers State have pushed average earners out of decent housing. Some public sector workers now sleep in offices and on campuses because they cannot afford rent. CAPPA condemns the recent allocation of public land to political appointees at a time of acute housing stress for ordinary Nigerians. It argues that public assets should serve broad social needs rather than elite interests. To relieve workers, CAPPA calls for a national housing strategy with affordable rental schemes, stronger labour protections and targeted investments in healthcare, education and public transport. It urges unions, civil society and policymakers to use May Day as a moment to demand accountability and lasting reforms.
