Stop Profiling Northern Migrants as Terrorists, Professor Warns

A professor at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs has advised against branding migrants from northern Nigeria and the wider Sahel as terrorists. He explained that most are fleeing poverty, joblessness and worsening environmental conditions. In an interview on a local radio programme, he highlighted how desertification has destroyed farms and displaced thousands. While admitting Nigeria faces serious security threats, he urged people to distinguish between armed groups and innocent economic migrants. He also defended ongoing government efforts to tackle insurgency. “Soldiers are dying, and we must pray for their success,” he said, calling for patience and support for security personnel on the frontlines.
