Lagos Raises UTME Admission Standard, Rejects JAMB’s 150 Cut-Off
The Lagos State Government has rejected JAMB’s approved 150 UTME cut-off for university admission, insisting that state-owned schools will only consider candidates who score 185 and above. Commissioner for Tertiary Education Tolani Sule announced this during a ministerial briefing marking Governor Sanwo-Olu’s term anniversary. Sule argued that Lagos cannot be grouped with educationally disadvantaged states and will uphold high academic standards. He noted that while JAMB set a national threshold, Lagos prefers to maintain its own, higher benchmark to protect quality. The state has expanded its university network from one to three institutions and plans to open a fourth. These investments aim to broaden access to tertiary education in Lagos without lowering admission criteria.
