Deadly Ebola Outbreak in Eastern DRC Claims 65 Lives
A new Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has killed at least 65 people so far. Health authorities in Ituri Province have reported 246 suspected cases and four confirmed fatalities. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention is monitoring the situation closely. An urgent coordination meeting was held with DRC, Uganda, South Sudan and global partners to boost cross-border surveillance and response. Ebola virus disease is a highly contagious haemorrhagic fever. It spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids and can cause severe bleeding, organ failure and death. Over the past five decades, Ebola has claimed about 15,000 lives across Africa, with the deadliest outbreak in DRC between 2018 and 2020 killing nearly 2,300 people.
