China’s 1.22M sqm High-Speed Rail Hub Built in Just 38 Months
Elon Musk drew attention to a new high-speed rail station in Chongqing, China, after a video of its vast halls and glass-roofed concourses went viral. The eight-storey terminal spans 1.22 million square metres—equivalent to 170 football fields—and features a 120,000 sqm roof weighing 16,500 tonnes. With 15 platforms, 29 tracks and capacity for 16,000 passengers per hour at speeds of up to 350 km/h, it began operations in June 2025. Remarkably, the mountain-side project was completed in just 38 months, underscoring how efficient planning and cost control can fast-track major infrastructure.
