Sultan of Sokoto Urges Nationwide Muharram Crescent Sighting
The Sultan of Sokoto and President of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has called on Muslims across Nigeria to join the sighting of the new moon of Muharram 1448AH. This key exercise will mark the start of the Islamic New Year. Authorities have designated Monday, June 15, 2026 (29th of Zulhijjah 1447AH), for observing the Muharram crescent. Observers should watch the sky after sunset and report any authentic sighting through the established traditional channels. Confirmed sightings must be communicated to the nearest District Head or Village Head, who will forward them to the Sultanate Council. This annual exercise is a significant religious duty that determines the beginning of each new Islamic month.
