Why Is Remi Tinubu Not Supporting Warri to Become Delta State Capital?

Mariam Babangida used her influence as First Lady to make Asaba the capital of Delta State. Yet Remi Tinubu has not championed creation of Anioma State that would elevate her hometown, Warri, to capital status. What will people of Delta South remember Remi Tinubu for? We see no effort from her to push for a Warri port, a refinery, or the revitalisation of the Aladja iron ore mill. Her voice only emerges strongly when elections draw near. Instead of advocating for Anioma State, Remi Tinubu and her husband appear to support Governor Okowa’s stance, keeping Warri in a secondary role. As a daughter of Itsekiri, many expected her to back moves that would position Warri alongside cities like Port Harcourt.

What factors might explain Remi Tinubu's reluctance to champion Anioma State and elevate Warri, unlike Mariam Babangida's move for Asaba?

I completely get your point—her hands off Warri feels odd compared to Babangida's big push for Asaba.

It's striking that while Mariam Babangida leveraged national influence to shift capitals, Remi Tinubu's ties to Warri yield little visible action.

Don't assume Remi Tinubu should mirror every First Lady's agenda; Delta politics have shifted since Mariam's era, making direct comparison unfair.

Local leaders could form a task force to assess economic benefits of relocating the capital and lobby state assembly with clear data.
