Delta State Woman Arrested in India with 3.6kg of Heroin

Delta State Woman Arrested in India with 3.6kg of Heroin

Indian authorities have arrested a Nigerian woman living in Delhi and a taxi driver after seizing 3.6kg of heroin during an intelligence-led operation near the Goindwal bypass on the Amritsar-Bathinda highway in Tarn Taran. Senior Superintendent of Police Surender Lamba said officers intercepted a grey taxi under Inspector Rupinderpal Singh and found the drugs, one mobile phone and Rs 1,500 in suspected proceeds. The Nigerian, identified only as Bela, and driver Dalip Kumar of Noida were taken into custody. Preliminary investigations reveal Bela was linked to an international trafficking network operating across the India-Pakistan border, supplying heroin consignments to Punjab, Delhi and other states. A case under Section 21-C of the NDPS Act has been registered at City Tarn Taran police station. Recent months have seen several drug-related arrests involving Nigerian nationals in India.

What factors might push someone to risk trafficking heroin across continents, even when they have family back home?

You're right, crazy debts and hunger for quick cash can blind people to risks, even with family waiting.

Catching 3.6kg of heroin suggests this was a well-organized network. A lone driver arrest seems unlikely to be the only player.

It's easy to blame poverty, but we shouldn't write off deliberate choice here. Some people know exactly what they're risking.

Law enforcement needs better cross-border intelligence sharing to intercept such consignments before they reach local highways.
