Enugu Clan Petitions Governor Over Unapproved 99-Year Lease of Ancestral Land
Members of the Anigbiyovo Oyiwode clan in Akpawfu, Nkanu East LGA, have petitioned Governor Peter Mbah over a proposed 99-year lease of 300 hectares of their ancestral land. They allege that one family pushed the deal without consulting both clans. Vice National President Fidelis Arum said he refused to sign the MoU at a meeting in the Igwe’s palace because his family was not involved. He warned that allowing outsiders to occupy the land could threaten homes and spark unrest. Secretary-General Chief Ikechukwu Udenweze noted a 2008 Supreme Court ruling confirming joint ownership. He said they have petitioned the Ministry of Justice, police, and security agencies to halt any deal. Youth and women representatives also voiced fears for future livelihoods. Rev. Fr. Cyprain Nwanegu denied any sale, explaining discussions with investors were exploratory and aimed at sharing equity with the community. The traditional ruler challenged accusers to provide proof of any transaction.
