Apapa Customs Seize 1.8 Tonnes of “Canadian Loud” and Expired Pharmaceuticals

Apapa Customs Seize 1.8 Tonnes of “Canadian Loud” and Expired Pharmaceuticals

In an intelligence-led operation on June 15, officers of the Nigeria Customs Service at Apapa Port, in collaboration with the NDLEA, intercepted a 40-foot container carrying 3,639 sachets of Cannabis Sativa (known as “Canadian Loud”). Each sachet weighed 500 grams, bringing the total haul to 1.819 tonnes. The Command also uncovered two additional 40-foot containers loaded with expired pharmaceuticals bearing 2021–2023 expiry dates. The seized items included antibiotics, injections, eye drops, and tablets with a combined duty-paid value of over ₦12.7 billion. Officials warn these drugs were destined for relabelling and illegal sale in Nigeria. Customs Area Controller Emmanuel Oshoba emphasised that Apapa Port remains under constant surveillance. He cautioned that anyone involved in smuggling or importing expired medicines is “an enemy of Nigeria’s progress” and will face swift and uncompromising action. The NCS reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and the economy through intelligence-driven enforcement.

How significant is this seizure of 1.8 tonnes of "Canadian Loud" and expired drugs for national security and public health?

True, stopping that huge load of illicit weed and expired meds really boosts security and protects public health.

It seems odd that such a large shipment passed earlier inspections before landing here, raising doubts about our port security procedures.

I'm not convinced this single bust will deter smugglers; they adapt quickly and might just find new routes or corrupt contacts.

Customs should increase random checks on expired pharmaceuticals and enhance staff training to spot falsified container manifests immediately.
