Debunking Adelabu’s 6,000MW Electricity Claim
Nigeria’s former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, claimed in his resignation letter that peak generation rose above 6,000MW under his watch. He added that available capacity was between 3,500MW and 4,500MW when he assumed office in August 2023. Quarterly and monthly data from industry sources show that peak output never surpassed the 6,000MW mark. The highest verified generation between 2023 and early 2026 hovered around 5,800MW. Experts warn against mixing metrics. Installed capacity exceeds 13,000MW, but available and peak generation remain distinct figures. Average electricity delivered to consumers stays near 4,200MW. Based on verified records, the claim of a peak above 6,000MW is false. Nigeria’s power sector has yet to sustain that level of generation.
