Mohamed Hany’s Own Goal Denies Egypt Historic Win as Belgium Rescue Draw

Mohamed Hany’s Own Goal Denies Egypt Historic Win as Belgium Rescue Draw

Egypt looked set to shock the world’s ninth-ranked team after Emam Ashour’s 19th-minute strike gave the Pharaohs a deserved lead against Belgium. Despite dominating large spells and repelling Belgium’s star attackers, Egypt conceded an unfortunate own goal in the 66th minute when defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned a cross past his own goalkeeper. Both sides pressed for a late winner, with standout saves from Egypt’s Oufa Shobeir and Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois keeping the score at 1-1. The draw leaves both teams on one point in Group G as the tournament moves on.

How did that own goal slip in despite Egypt's solid defense? Could better positioning or tactics have prevented it?

I agree, that blunder felt so out of place. A tweak in marking or a bit more communication could've stopped it.

Egypt dominated much of the match, but falling short against a top-ten side raises questions about their finishing composure in key moments.

I'm not convinced that a single own goal defines Egypt's progress; they still showed strong character and skill throughout ninety minutes.

Next time Egypt should focus on clear communication in the backline and rehearse set pieces to avoid costly mistakes under pressure.
