Lagos Police Crack N1bn Luxury Car Fraud Syndicate
The Lagos State Police have arrested an alleged syndicate that used dud cheques to acquire exotic vehicles. Investigations revealed 29 cars valued at over N1 billion were taken from unsuspecting dealers. Detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department linked three separate complaints and uncovered a coordinated scheme. The suspects issued post-dated and dishonoured cheques, claiming the purchases were for prominent politicians or legitimate business needs. Intelligence-led operations supported by the AUTOREG vehicle tracking platform recovered eight vehicles, including Toyota Highlanders, a RAV4, Hiace buses and a Ford Edge. Efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining vehicles and apprehend suspects still at large. The police have warned dealers to verify identities and business registrations before releasing vehicles. They urged caution when accepting post-dated cheques or dealing through intermediaries and called on the public to continue providing credible information.
