Study Links Ultra-Processed Foods to 67% Higher Heart Risk

Study Links Ultra-Processed Foods to 67% Higher Heart Risk

Researchers warn that eating large amounts of ultra-processed foods can sharply raise cardiovascular risk. These industrial products include packaged bread, sugary cereals, processed meats, soft drinks and frozen meals. A US study of 6,814 adults found those consuming about nine servings a day were 67% more likely to suffer a major heart event. Each extra daily serving added around a 5% increase in risk. Experts point to high sodium, added sugars and unhealthy fats in these foods, which may drive inflammation, harm gut health and raise blood pressure and cholesterol. While the research shows correlation rather than direct cause, health professionals advise focusing on whole or minimally processed foods. Diets rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, fish and nuts support heart health. Occasional treats are fine, but frequent reliance on processed items could increase long-term risks.

Not sure cutting bread alone boosts mood that much; other factors might matter.

While ultra-processed foods seem harmful, factors like overall lifestyle and genetics probably play a bigger role than any single study suggests.

To lower risk, try swapping sugary cereals for oats, choose fresh fruits over packaged bread, and limit soft drinks.
