Trump Criticises England’s Defensive Use of Kane After Argentina Semi-Final Loss

Trump Criticises England’s Defensive Use of Kane After Argentina Semi-Final Loss

Former US president Donald Trump weighed in on England’s 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina. He questioned manager Thomas Tuchel’s decision to deploy captain Harry Kane in a defensive role late in the match. England went ahead through Anthony Gordon before shifting to a back-five formation. Lionel Messi inspired a late comeback that secured Argentina’s place in the final against Spain. Speaking at a reception, Trump said, “They took their best player and put him on defence... We got to be a little offensive.” Tuchel insisted match decisions are driven by game demands. Trump also mentioned he contacted FIFA chief Gianni Infantino over USA striker Folarin Balogun’s suspension and praised the upcoming 2026 World Cup as one of the biggest sporting events ever staged.

Do you think Kane's defensive change was too reactionary, or did Tuchel have no choice with Argentina pressing so hard?

I get you – that switch did feel knee-jerk, yet Argentina's press left few other choices.

It's odd to see a former US president critique football tactics when he's not known for any coaching credentials.

Maybe Tuchel wanted extra firepower in midfield rather than a defensive blockade, which could explain deploying Kane deeper.

In future knockout matches, keeping an extra striker like Kane forward until the final minutes might preserve attacking threat without risking defence.
