NANS Refuses to Join Sowore’s ‘Take It Back’ Protest Over Political Motives

NANS Refuses to Join Sowore’s ‘Take It Back’ Protest Over Political Motives

The National Association of Nigerian Students has officially distanced itself from Omoyele Sowore’s “Take It Back” movement. The student union accuses the campaign of serving hidden political interests rather than genuine advocacy for Nigerian youth. In a statement issued in Abuja, NANS president Akinteye Babatunde Afeez dismissed claims questioning his status as a student. He urged media outlets to verify facts before publishing and warned that mixing activism with politics undermines public trust. While NANS rejects partnering with the Take It Back protests on abducted students and teachers, it praised efforts by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Nigeria Union of Teachers. The union reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful action and continued pressure on the government for the release of all kidnapped victims.

What do you make of NANS rejecting Sowore's protest due to political motives rather than student interests?

Do you think NANS was more concerned about political fallout than genuine student interests?

It's interesting how student bodies increasingly distance themselves from protests, concerned more about hidden agendas than actual youth empowerment.

I'm not convinced every protest suffers from political interference; sometimes genuine causes just need stronger organisation to gain trust.

Student unions could start publishing clear action plans and transparent funding sources to reassure members about real intentions.
