John Obuh Blames CAF for AFCON Trophy Chaos, Backs Senegal’s Parade
Former Nigeria U-20 coach John Obuh has come to Senegal’s defense over their public display of the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in France. He says CAF’s delayed ruling sparked confusion and sympathy for the Teranga Lions. Obuh noted that CAF stripped Senegal of the 2023 title months after the final and awarded it to Morocco. The decision is now under appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. He called the timing of CAF’s announcement “unwise” and said it undermined the Confederation’s credibility. Senegal still considers itself the rightful champion pending the appeal. “They can parade the trophy anywhere until that appeal is heard,” Obuh told a sports outlet. He believes CAF should have settled the matter on match day to avoid the current dispute.
