South Africa to Deploy 1,000 Buses for Repatriation of 7,000 Stranded Malawians
The South African government will mobilise over 1,000 buses to return more than 7,000 Malawian nationals stuck in Sherwood Park, Durban. This decision follows a wave of protests demanding that undocumented migrants leave the country by June 30. At a briefing in Pretoria, Mmamoloko Kubayi of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration said transport needs have surged. Malawi has provided eight buses and South Africa will add ten more to the effort. To date, 980 Malawians were deported from the Lindela centre on June 10. Officials plan to set up a court at Lindela to speed up future deportations. Law enforcement has arrested over 40,000 people for immigration violations since January, including 7,400 last month. Authorities also noted 143 arrests for inciting violence during recent protests.
