TCN and AfDB Upgrade Alaoji–Onitsha 138 km Power Line to Boost Supply
The Transmission Company of Nigeria, in partnership with the African Development Bank, has begun upgrading the 138 km Alaoji–Onitsha 330 kV transmission line. The project will convert the existing single-circuit line into a double-circuit, quad-conductor system to quadruple bulk power capacity in the South-East. Compensation payments were made to affected communities in eight local government areas of Abia and Imo states. Project Affected Persons received payments between March 31 and April 2, 2026, and have 90 days to vacate the right of way. The Federal Government provided counterpart funding to ensure prompt and fair compensation. Under the leadership of TCN’s management and presidential approval, the upgrade is scheduled for completion within 18 months.
