Ghanaian Chef Banned for Five Years After Storing Fish in Bathtub for Meals
A Ghanaian chef avoided jail at St Albans Crown Court after pleading guilty to storing fish in his bathroom next to a toilet and selling meals unfit for human consumption. Stephen Akuoko ran Tribal Foods in Watford for more than three years, supplying ready meals to local shops with misleading use-by dates and missing ingredient labels. Firefighters discovered large quantities of fish in his bathtub and on the bathroom floor after responding to a house fire. Although Akuoko told Trading Standards he would stop trading, CCTV footage showed him making further deliveries just days later. Judge Francis Sheridan handed Akuoko a two-year suspended prison sentence. He was also banned from operating any food business in the UK for five years. Prosecutor Michael Coley called the breaches “intentional” and “a flagrant disregard for the law.” Watford Borough Council praised its environmental health team for protecting public health. Associate Director Justine Hoy stressed that food safety laws exist to prevent serious harm and that the council will continue to enforce high standards.
