US Ends 10-Year Syria Mission as Last Troops Exit
American forces and equipment left Syria via Jordan this week, closing a decade-long operation against the Islamic State, according to Middle East Eye. Syrian army units, including the Kurdish-led 60th Division of the SDF, have taken control of the Qasrak base and its airstrip after US troops withdrew to avoid possible attacks by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq. Damascus welcomed the handover, saying it reflects the integration of the SDF into national forces and the state’s full responsibility for combating terrorism on its territory. Washington, which backed President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s government after Assad’s December 2024 defeat, had maintained around 1,000 troops in Syria. Earlier this year, US forces also left bases at al-Tanf and al-Shaddadi under a new security agreement with Damascus.
