Retired Major General and Wife Plead for Government Rescue in Bandits’ Video

Retired Major General and Wife Plead for Government Rescue in Bandits’ Video

Major General Abubakar Rabe (rtd) and his wife were abducted last week on Karaduwa-Matazu Road in Katsina State. Bandits released a video showing the couple standing together and appealing for government intervention. Mrs. Abubakar relays their captors’ demands: the release of three members—Sani, Aminu and Nasiru—and the return of livestock allegedly seized from the group. The retired general briefly spoke in the video, urging authorities to pursue dialogue and peaceful coexistence. He and his wife were travelling with their driver, Abdullahi Saidu, on May 30 when their vehicle was ambushed along the Marabar Musawa-Kafinsoli road in Matazu LGA.

What do you think the government can realistically do to secure their release after that harrowing video plea?

That video plea highlights how little direct action has been taken so far, despite the high rank of this retired general.

I'm not convinced that public pleas help in hostage situations. Sometimes silence and secret negotiations yield better results than airing demands.

The government should establish a dedicated task force with local informants along that road and negotiate the bandits quietly to secure a safe release.
