Tension Rises in NDC Kano as Chairman Rejects Kwankwaso’s Takeover Bid

A fresh crisis has erupted in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State. Chairman Usaini Isa Mai Riga says he will not hand over control to former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Kwankwaso joined the NDC last Sunday alongside Peter Obi. His entry triggered a standoff with the state leadership over who should run the party chapter. Mai Riga told Premier Radio that two meetings meant to integrate Kwankwaso collapsed over leadership disputes. “He wants us to hand over the entire party to him, despite our sacrifices,” he said. The chairman also alleged that the NDC national office suspended Kano’s state congress to smooth Kwankwaso’s takeover. But the Kwankwasiyya movement insists no one plans to hijack the party structure and says the congress will go ahead soon.

It seems odd that Isa Mai Riga would ignore Kwankwaso's influence after Peter Obi's entry stirred fresh crisis in Kano's NDC.

We often overestimate how much one individual can shift party dynamics, especially when local leaders hold real power.

Party members should call for clear guidelines on leadership handovers to avoid repeated standoffs and ensure smooth transitions.
