Nigeria and Benin Agree on Clearer Borders to Enhance Security and Trade
At a two-day Cross Border Cooperation Programme held on May 14–15 along the Nigeria–Benin and Benin–Togo borders, the National Boundary Commission underlined the need for precise border demarcation. This step is expected to strengthen security, improve governance and boost trade between Nigeria and Benin. Represented by Farouk Tarfa, the Commission’s Director-General, Adamu Adaji, joined his Beninese counterpart, Yousouf Adams, to recall how many African boundaries drawn during the colonial era remained unclear at independence. They praised dialogue and cooperation for resolving disputes peacefully. Participants also called on the German International Cooperation to help complete the Nigeria–Benin boundary demarcation. Once finalised, the process will improve community resilience, create new livelihood opportunities in borderland areas and deepen regional integration across West Africa.
