Troops of the 176 Guards Battalion carried out a night operation in Dukpa community, Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT. On July 13, soldiers arrested a suspected kingpin of an illegal mining syndicate and three accomplices after following actionable intelligence from a July 7 arrest. Recovered items include a motorcycle, digging tools, filter carpets, pumping machine nozzles, 53 wraps of suspected cannabis and ₦360,400 in cash. The principal suspect admitted to sponsoring the operation and recruiting labourers from Katsina State. This raid forms part of Operation MESA, which aims to dismantle illegal mining networks, safeguard Nigeria’s mineral resources and address security threats linked to illicit mining activities in the FCT.
