Buratai’s Blueprint: Tackling Nigeria’s Widening Insecurity Crisis

Buratai’s Blueprint: Tackling Nigeria’s Widening Insecurity Crisis

Nigeria’s security crisis has moved from the Northeast into the Northwest, North Central, and now the Southwest. Former Army Chief Tukur Buratai warns that threats are often displaced rather than fully contained. He highlights how criminal groups exploit political transitions and how some political actors have fuelled violence by using thugs for electoral gains. Kidnapping operations face a moral dilemma: urgent rescues risk civilian lives, while ransom payments strengthen criminal networks. Insecurity also threatens the economy by deterring investors, raising business costs, and disrupting supply chains. Buratai proposes decentralised security coordination, increased recruitment and training, better welfare for personnel, and stronger community partnerships. He argues that lasting peace requires tackling root causes like poverty, unemployment, and weak governance. Only political will, institutional reform, and collective action can break Nigeria’s cycle of violence.

It's notable that insecurity isn't eradicated but merely pushed from one zone to another, raising doubts about lasting effectiveness of current approaches.

I'm not convinced that focusing on political transition periods is primary when resource conflicts often fuel displaced insecurity across regions.

Security agencies should coordinate with community leaders ahead of elections and share real-time data to curb migration of criminal elements between states.
