Ex-Eagle Baruwa: Trust Coach Chelle and Nigeria Will Qualify for 2030 World Cup

Ex-Eagle Baruwa: Trust Coach Chelle and Nigeria Will Qualify for 2030 World Cup

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Abiodun Baruwa insists that Eric Chelle has the vision to guide Nigeria to the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Chelle took charge midway through the 2026 qualifiers, leading the team to a second-place finish and a playoff spot. Since then, he has won back-to-back Unity Cups and secured third place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Baruwa also offered early praise for young goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo after his clean sheet against Zimbabwe at the Unity Cup. He says he wants to see more of the former Arsenal keeper before passing final judgement. Attention now turns to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, where Nigeria will face hosts Tanzania, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau from September.

Finishing second in the 2026 qualifiers was solid, but playoff spots often feel more like a hurdle than proof of long-term progress.

I'm not convinced a mid-qualifier coaching change alone guarantees improved results; continuity and player morale matter just as much heading into future camps.

To build on current momentum, the team should invest in regular high-intensity training camps and schedule friendlies against top-ranked African sides.
