NDC Requires 2027 Governorship and National Assembly Candidates to Sign Anti-Defection Pledge

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has introduced a new rule for the 2027 elections: all governorship and National Assembly hopefuls must sign an indemnity committing them to vacate their seats if they defect after winning. The policy was unveiled by national chairman Moses Cleopas at the party’s Abuja secretariat. Candidates who win on the NDC platform will forfeit their mandates if they leave the party. The party says the measure will protect the sanctity of electoral mandates and curb post-election political migration. Legal advisers cited provisions in the NDC constitution, the 1999 Constitution, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights to support the move.

How effective do you think the NDC's anti-defection pledge will be in discouraging party switching before the 2027 elections?

That pledge could send a strong signal, especially if party leadership follow through on consequences.

It seems the indemnity requirement reflects deep mistrust between party leaders and candidates even before any votes are cast.

I'm not convinced this pledge won't just push defectors underground instead of stopping them from switching allegiances.

Parties should back up this pledge with transparent monitoring and clear sanctions to ensure compliance and maintain internal discipline through 2027.
