Edo Closes Three Secondary Schools After DSS Uncovers Student Kidnap Plot

The Edo state government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo LGA after the DSS warned of a planned mass abduction of pupils. The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School and Makeke Secondary School. A 25-year-old suspect was arrested on June 4 near Makeke Secondary School while reportedly conducting surveillance. According to the security memo, intercepted communications show bandits targeting students for higher ransoms after failed attempts on wealthy individuals. All activities at the three schools are suspended until further notice. West African Senior School Certificate Examination candidates will still sit their exams under strict security. Parents are urged to collect students safely and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to neutralise the threat.

It's troubling that multiple schools were targeted at once, yet details about the plot's origin or suspects remain unclear.

Closing schools feels reactive rather than preventive; authorities should invest in better local intelligence and early intervention strategies instead.
