US Launches $160bn Trump-Era Tariff Refunds But Consumers Might Be Left Out
US authorities have opened the portal for importers to claim refunds after the Supreme Court struck down Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs. Companies can now apply online for the more than $160 billion collected in duties, plus interest. By early April, over 56,000 importers had submitted applications worth around $127 billion. Refunds are expected within 60 to 90 days using a consolidated system rather than item-by-item claims. However, individual consumers who paid higher prices due to these levies are not eligible for direct compensation. Some businesses say they may pass savings on to customers, but class-action lawsuits have already been filed against major retailers to force them to share any refunds. Many small companies remain cautious, treating refunds as a buffer against possible new tariffs later in the year.
