Glasgow 2026: Ashe, Ezechukwu and Iyiazi Lead Team Nigeria's Opening Athletics Challenge
Athletics begins at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Monday, July 27, with Team Nigeria targeting an early medal push across sprinting, field events and para-athletics. Favour Ashe runs in Heat 1 of the men's 100m after posting a season's best of 9.93 seconds at the national trials in Lagos. Fakorede Adekalu, who has run 9.98 seconds this season, will compete in Heat 10 as Nigeria seeks two places in the next round. Oyesade Olatoye competes in the women's hammer throw qualification, while Miracle Ezechukwu takes part in the women's 100m first round. Eucharia Iyiazi will contest the women's F57 shot put final later in the evening, offering Nigeria an early chance of a medal. Athletics Federation of Nigeria president Tonobok Okowa says the strength of the squad has raised expectations for Nigeria to make a strong impact in Glasgow.
