Why Nigeria Must Reinstate Motorcycle Movement Bans to Curb Banditry
Motorcycles, or okada, fill mobility gaps but have also caused harm. Road crashes claim many lives, and armed groups now use convoys of bikes for attacks. Recent assaults in Sokoto and the kidnapping of schoolchildren in Oyo show how easily bandits exploit motorcycles. Despite past bans in seven North-West states, some regions lifted restrictions even as violence grew. Other countries, like Mali, show that limiting bike movements disrupts criminal logistics. Past measures by the FCT and Lagos authorities proved effective when enforced consistently. To protect citizens, states should restore motorcycle curbs, improve rural roads, tighten union oversight, and empower security agencies to intercept suspicious convoys. These steps can help deny criminals their preferred mode of transport.
