Senator Ikpea Calls for Federal Intervention to Curb Erosion in Esan Land
Senator Joseph Ikpea has moved a motion in the Senate urging the federal government to tackle severe ecological degradation across Esan Land. He highlighted alarming gully erosion in Esan Central and West, which is cutting off roads, destroying farms, and threatening homes. The senator warned that unchecked logging and expanding agriculture are depleting once-dense forest reserves of iroko, mahogany, and other species. He pointed to flooding and erosion around Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma as evidence of growing environmental pressure from deforestation and unplanned urban growth. Despite past assessments by the Ecological Fund Office, NEMA, and the Ministry of Environment, he lamented that no sustained action has been taken. Ikpea urged immediate on-site assessments, emergency relief for affected communities, and long-term programs for erosion control, land reclamation, and afforestation. He asked Senate committees on Environment, Ecology, and Climate Change to fast-track funding and ensure Esan Land is prioritised in national ecological plans. The Senate will soon debate these recommendations as part of wider efforts to address Nigeria’s erosion crisis.
