Why Nigeria Must Strengthen, Not Abolish, HND–BSc Top-Up Programmes
Recent proposals to scrap HND–BSc Top-Up programmes risk worsening educational inequality in Nigeria. Polytechnic graduates need this pathway to compete fairly with degree holders. Many countries such as the UK, Canada, and Germany recognize Top-Up routes to boost technical skills and drive economic growth. Abolishing the programme would deny Nigerians access to flexible, affordable academic progression. Instead of abolition, the government should standardize curricula, enforce quality control, and upgrade polytechnics to award degrees. A stronger Top-Up system will promote inclusion, reduce unemployment, and support national development.
